Police capture motorist who drove through gap in median on Constant Spring Road

The police have apprehended one of the motorists captured in photographs driving through gaps in the median created to allow pedestrians to cross the newly constructed Constant Spring Road.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Kevin Blake, head of the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB), said the vehicle was also seized.

Photographs have been circulating on social media showing the drivers making the illegal turns, some of them using pedestrian crossings to get to the other side of the dual carriageway.

ACP Blake is urging drivers to stop the unlawful manoeuvre, warning that more arrests are coming.

The authorities have been receiving backlash for the height of the barriers and lack of spaces for pedestrians to cross.

They were particularly criticized after it was revealed that there were no breaks in the median even where pedestrian crossings were painted.

On Tuesday, the contractors made the corrections to allow pedestrian access.

ACP Blake said the authorities will be erecting barriers which will prevent motorists using the breaks in the median but still allow pedestrian access.

ACP Blake lamented that it was "unfortunate that as a society we have to do more than that to cause persons to comply."

He thanked citizens who have been vigilant in taking photographs capturing these activities and urged them to continue highlighting unlawful practices
